The Choice of Satya Nadella Reinforces Microsoft’s Focus on Cloud Computing

If you didn’t already hear the news, Satya Nadella has been chosen as the next CIO of Microsoft.  He is only the third leader in the company’s 38-year history.  As a 22 year veteran of the company, he has been focused on Microsoft’s cloud computing offerings for the past seven months.  According to former chairman and CEO Bill Gates:  “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together.  His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.”

Microsoft understands that the future of cloud computing has the potential to drive growth and profitability even as the PC market continues to decline.  Subscription based software such as Office 365 and Infrastructure as a service offerings like Azure are seen as the biggest drivers of Microsoft’s growth in the next couple of years.  This Microsoft webpage has some interesting statistics about the growth of the “Enterprise Cloud”:

  • 1 in 4 Microsoft enterprise customers has Office 365
  • 90 percent of Fortune 100 companies use Lync
  • Office 365 is available in more than 125 markets worldwide
  • 50 percent of Fortune 500 companies use Windows Azure
  • Office 365 is used by 100,000 State of Texas employees to collaborate and meet CJIS and HIPAA requirements
  • On average, over 1,000 new customers sign up for Windows Azure every day
  • Microsoft has invested $15 billion to build its massive cloud infrastructure
